Frequently Asked Questions

Before reaching out, please read through these frequently asked questions to see if parent counseling is a good fit for you.

  • Parent counseling is for parents of all genders, cultural backgrounds, faiths and sexual orientations. For parent counseling to be effective it is important that:

-Parent is feeling stable in their daily functioning and not experiencing a crisis.

-Parent has adequate support outside of parent counseling for any mental health condition(s) they are experiencing. My services do not focus on diagnosing or treating a mental health condition.

-The home environment is safe and basic needs are being met.

-Parents who are coparenting (whether together or separated) are communicating effectively and respectfully, even when there is a difference of opinion on parenting issues. My services are not a replacement for couple’s counseling, and I do not provide advisement on any custody related issues.

I welcome questions regarding goodness of fit.

  • Initial session: 300

Standard counseling session (30-50 minutes): 250

I am not in-network with any insurance companies. Payments are due at the time of service.

  • If you are interested in becoming a client, please reach out via my contact page. I will be in touch with you to see if I may be able to help based on your needs. Counseling starts with an initial extended session where I learn more about you, your family, and work with you to clarify your goals. You should not expect to find resolution to any issue you may be hoping to address in the first session, as it is intended serve as an important building block for future work.

  • Follow-up sessions focus on moving toward your goals, with the understanding that they may shift during our work together. I draw from areas of psychology including, but not limited to, child development, attachment theory, and internal family systems. My counseling approach also utilizes coaching techniques and psychoeducation. Our work together may be brief (less than 12 sessions) or take place over an extended period depending on your goals. As soon as I can recommend a proposed course of work together, I will share that with you.

  • Definitely not! Parenting is not a one-size-fits-all application. Kids are different, parents are different, and what works in one household may not work the same in another. However, I do believe that all kids (and parents too) are good inside, and that is the foundation from which I work. Parents that are insistent on using a shame or punishment oriented approach to parenting will not be a good fit for my practice.

  • While the terms counseling and therapy are sometimes used interchangeably, it’s important to understand the difference before deciding if working with me is right for you. I offer parent counseling, which is an intervention that addresses a need but does not depend on evaluating and treating a mental health disorder. On the other hand, therapy involves the evaluation and treatment of a mental health disorder. If you are seeking treatment for a mental health disorder, my services would not be an appropriate fit. My counseling services are specifically for parents who want to focus on parenting issues, and related topics. It is not intended to serve as a treatment for a mental health disorder.

  • While I am hopeful that parent counseling will benefit both you and your child, the primary focus is on you, the parent. The parent or couple that initiates the sessions is typically considered the client. I do not work with your child directly.

  • I am currently only offering online sessions. This may change in the near future. Online sessions are not a good fit for everyone, so we will discuss your specific needs during the initial session.
